How To Manage Complexity

The Novation Circuit is a groovebox packed with content and songs but with limited memory. Users needed to back up their content so they could make more songs. That was just the beginning….

Components’ Beginnings

The first version of Components was released in 2016 as a simple content backup tool. Operating in the browser using WebMIDI, we removed the need for users to install additional software to gain access to this content.

After the initial release, the site expanded exponentially, incorporating a synth editor for Circuit, alongside library management and editors for all modern Novation products! During this period I was responsible for the UX of the service.

You can read more about the initial development and release of Components in this blog post I wrote for Novation.

Many hats

I performed many roles throughout my time on the project including UX Designer, Researcher, Product Owner, and Scrum Master!

In my role as UX designer, I directly contributed to architectural and system-level decisions as well as contributing to visual design.

By understanding our users via observing their usage via HotJar, listening to feedback, and reviewing analytics, we’ve been able to grow Components into a service that all Novation products now, and in the future, will use!
