Visual Design and Style Guide

Pro Audio Engineers using large numbers of Dante AOIP channels did not have a way to manage multiple surround sound mixes from a hardware device. They needed a way to do this whether they were in the studio or working the front of house at a live show.

What is the R1?

The RedNet R1 is a remote surround sound controller for RedNet and Dante audio systems. Allowing the engineer complete access and control over up to 12 channels of audio in multiple mixes and output configurations. Its goal is to give ultimate flexibility and control over complex audio setups and display all mission-critical information.

Design

My role was to define the UI and Interactions for the device screens.

Throughout the process, a standardized layout that would offer optimum control and visual feedback was developed. The spec generated used a set grid.

Multiple images for all pages were created to show all possible setups. As nearly all text on the screens could be defined by the user, appropriate use of space and font size was a primary consideration.

Color Spec

A full-color spec was needed not only for the screens but also for the RGB backlit hardware buttons. Because RGB values do not directly translate between the screen and physical LEDs, I needed to take care to match the two as closely as possible.

Reception

“Comprehensive and capable monitor controller.” — “An excellent device.”

Pro Tools Expert

Customers worldwide have taken to using their device in their Dante systems and Focusrite has received a lot of direct praise on the design and functionality of this controller.
